How do Ford Hybrid Vehicles Work?

Ford hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles use advanced technology and powerful rechargeable battery packs to provide the necessary power to give you a great driving experience and accomplish your goals. At Kayser Ford, you'll find many hybrid vehicle options to fit your efficiency and capability needs. There are two types of Ford hybrid vehicles available in numerous body styles, from a hatchback to a full-size SUV like the new 2024 Ford Explorer Limited Hybrid or a truck like the new 2024 Ford Maverick. Automobile companies, like Ford, use different hybrid designs to accomplish different missions, ranging from maximum fuel savings to keeping the vehicle's cost as low as possible. Get to know the Ford hybrid and plug-in hybrid to decide which is best for you.

How Traditional Hybrids Work

A hybrid combines at least one electric motor with a gasoline engine to move the car, and its system recaptures energy via regenerative braking. Sometimes the electric motor does all the work, sometimes it's the gas engine, and sometimes they work together. The result is less gasoline burned and, therefore, better fuel economy. Electricity comes from a high-voltage battery pack (separate from the car's conventional 12-volt battery) that's replenished by capturing energy from deceleration that's typically lost to heat generated by the brakes in conventional cars. (This happens through the regenerative braking system.) Hybrids also use the gas engine to charge and maintain the battery.

How Plug-In Hybrids Work

Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) work similarly to traditional hybrids, except the battery packs are much more powerful, and more emphasis is placed on operating with as little gas as possible. You can travel for limited distances in pure electric mode, so if you have short commutes, it's possible to handle most of your driving fuel free. Selectable drive modes are also available so you can decide how to prioritize your energy consumption. When the batteries run out of power, you won't be able to drive 100% gas free. However, the system will still save on gas by running like a traditional hybrid and using regenerative braking technology to continue producing electricity until you can recharge the battery packs. Purchasing or leasing a new PHEV, like the Ford Escape Plug-In Hybrid, is a great way to transition to an electric vehicle without the pressure of cutting out gas completely.

The Family of Ford Hybrid and Plug-In Hybrid Vehicles

Ford hybrid and electric vehicles feature advanced fuel-saving technology. Whether they're operating in electric mode, gas mode, or a combination of both, these vehicles optimize efficiency and simplicity. The plug-in hybrid vehicles can be recharged in under three hours using a 240-volt outlet.
